Vernon Hills, IL - Richard Coleman Nevins ("Dick" to his friends) passed away on November 25, 2025 at the age of 91.
Richard was born in Pittsburgh but grew up in Los Angeles, where he attended Claremont Men's College. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in South Korea as a tank commander for several years in the late 1950s. Upon returning to the United States he took a job in the insurance industry and became a pioneer in direct mail marketing of insurance products. He worked for multiple companies during his career (Montgomery Ward stands out as the company which first brought him to Chicago), but despite multiple moves he always found his way back to Chicagoland. Richard and his wife of 60 years, Jo Ann Nevins, lived in Libertyville for 29 years prior to his recent move into a senior living community in Vernon Hills.
After his retirement, Richard enjoyed a number of hobbies including photography, recreational shooting, collecting antiques (especially antique clocks), drawing and painting, watching old movies, and reading. He enjoyed getting together regularly with his many friends, and especially loved dogs.
Richard was proceeded in death by his wife Jo Ann Nevins, his sisters Patricia Mason and Gail Nevins, and his niece Eileen Sheehan. He is survived by his daughter Diana Nevins, his son Edward Nevins, his nieces and nephews Kevin Mason, Brian Mason, Maureen Sheehan, Teresa Strouse, Michael Sheehan, and Carol Pogoni, as well as many dear friends.
No funeral service is planned at this time, but a Celebration of Life will take place in the spring or summer of 2026.
Those wishing to honor his memory may make a donation to the local animal rescue organizations Placing Paws of Illinois and Save-A-Pet.
