Paul F. Schif Obituary

Paul F. Schif

Paul F. Schif spent 95 years rooted in the community he loved. On Monday afternoon, November 24, 2025, he peacefully completed his earthly journey at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, surrounded by his family.

Paul was born on December 21, 1929, in Elgin, the son of Eugene and Bertha (nee Becker) Schif. He grew up in the Dundee–Elgin area, a place that would remain his home for the rest of his life. After graduating from Dundee Community High School in 1948, he served his country during the Korean War era and spent time posted in Italy. This experience shaped his sense of duty, humility, and steadiness.

On July 16, 1955, Paul married Carol Jean (nee Berkley), the woman who became not only his beloved wife but his closest companion in all things. Together, for 67 years, they built a life filled with shared routines, quiet joys, and the simple, particular love that only grows stronger with time. Her passing in 2022 was a loss he carried gently, always remembering her with gratitude and affection.

The couple's annual sale of vintage and carefully restored antique furniture, knick-knacks, and other collectables was a popular Dundee attraction. Paul and Carol made many friends through these sales, but people were always more important than profits.

Paul worked for Illinois Bell Telephone/AT&T for 37 years, starting as a lineman and working up to vehicle procurement and fleet management. His entire career was marked by reliability and pride in a job well done. Even after retirement, he wasn't one to sit still. He found joy in greeting neighbors and lending a hand during his 15 years at Ziegler's Ace Hardware in West Dundee. Whether helping a customer find the right tool or offering a bit of friendly conversation, Paul had a way of making people feel welcome and became known as "The Guy". He knew how to get the answers customers needed and could be counted on to solve even the toughest "fix-it" problems.

Faith anchored his life. For more than 67 years, Paul was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee. He served the congregation in many ways—Trustee, Deacon, Men's Club member—and he did so with a quiet steadfastness that reflected who he was: a man who lived his values rather than announcing them.

Those who knew Paul will remember a gentle, steady presence; a man who believed in hard work, showing up, and caring for the people around him. His most tremendous pride was his family—his son, Michael and wife, Cynthia; his grandson, Maxwell; his sister-in-law, Barbara and husband, Eddie Hill; and daughter; Kim Rose. Also, a niece, Nancy Schuneman, and husband; Art, a nephew, Scott Schif; and many other nieces and grand-nieces who brightened his days.

Paul is reunited in heaven with his beloved Carol; his parents; and his siblings, Richard, John, and Mary Lou Hollis Duensing.

Per his wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family service and burial were held on Thursday, December 4, 2025. A graveside service was held at River Valley Memorial Gardens in West Dundee on Thursday, December 4, officiated by Rev. Joe Glombicki, Pastor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the spiritual home that meant so much to Paul - 401 West Main Street, West Dundee, IL 60118.
